Walk any market, gift shop or online marketplace and you will find carved stone everywhere — animals, skulls, spheres, leaves, palm-sized shapes meant to sit in your hand. Very little of it is carved by hand. A large share is machine-cut in volume, and a meaningful share is not stone at all: it is dyed resin, glass, or crushed mineral powder bound together and pressed into a mold.
None of that makes a piece bad. Molded resin has its place, and a clean CNC-cut piece in real jasper is a real object made of real material. The problem is when a $6 molded piece is priced and described like a $200 one-of-a-kind carving, and the buyer has no way to tell the difference.
You do not need a lab to sort this out. Most of what matters is visible in the first sixty seconds if you know where to look.
Three different things get sold as "carved stone"
Before the checks make sense, it helps to know what you are actually distinguishing between.
- Hand-carved. A person removed material from a natural block using rotary tools, burrs and abrasives, making decisions as they went. Every piece differs because every block differs.
- Machine-carved. A CNC mill or duplicating lathe cuts the same shape repeatedly from genuine stone. The material is real; the form is identical across the batch. Hand finishing may or may not follow.
- Molded. Resin, glass, or "reconstituted" stone — mineral powder mixed with binder — poured or pressed into a mold. This is a manufacturing process, not carving at all.
There is a fourth category worth naming: genuine stone that has been dyed, heated, stabilized or coated. That is a separate question from carving, and I will come back to it, because treated stone is routinely mislabeled as fake when it usually is not.
Start with the seam line
The single fastest tell is a parting line. Molds come apart in halves, and where the halves met, a faint ridge or groove often runs around the piece — over the top of the head, down the sides, around the base. Manufacturers grind and buff these away, but the line frequently survives in the places a buffing wheel cannot easily reach: inside ear folds, between fingers or toes, under a chin, in the tight angle where a wing meets a body.
Run a thumbnail across those recesses. On a molded piece you will sometimes catch a subtle ridge that runs in a suspiciously straight, continuous path across features that have nothing to do with each other. Carving marks do not behave that way; they follow the form.
Symmetry is the companion signal. Hand-carved animals are almost never perfectly symmetrical — one eye sits a hair higher, one ear is fractionally thicker. If the left half of a piece mirrors the right half exactly, you are looking at a mold or a machine file.
Read the tool marks
Carving leaves evidence. Under angled light — tilt the piece so light rakes across the surface rather than hitting it head-on — hand-carved work shows small directional scratch patterns that change direction as the carver repositioned. In tight recesses, where polishing is hardest, those marks survive. That is not a flaw. On serious work it is the fingerprint of the process.
Machine-cut stone tends toward the opposite: uniform, parallel stepping or a consistent tool-path pattern, often faint concentric rings on curved surfaces. It looks regular in a way hands do not produce.
Molded resin often shows no tool marks whatsoever, because there were no tools. Instead you get a slightly rubbery, uniformly glossy surface, sometimes with tiny pinholes where air was trapped against the mold wall.
Undercuts are another clue. Deep undercuts — a curl of hair that loops back on itself, an opening carved through the piece, a form that tucks underneath — are difficult to mold because the piece would not release. When you see genuine undercutting with clean interior finishing, something removed material to get there.
Weight, temperature and sound
These checks cost nothing and work at a booth table.
Weight. Most carving stones are considerably denser than resin. Pick the piece up and register whether it feels heavier than it looks. If you can, compare two similar-sized objects side by side — the difference is usually obvious once you have felt it twice.
Temperature. Stone has real thermal mass. It feels cool against the back of your hand or your cheek and takes a while to warm up. Resin and plastic reach skin temperature almost immediately. This test is less reliable in a hot outdoor market where everything has been sitting in the sun, but in a shop it works well.
Sound. Tap the piece lightly with a fingernail. Dense stone gives a short, higher, harder click. Resin gives a duller, flatter, more muffled sound. This one takes some calibration, so try it on pieces you already know.
None of these is conclusive alone. Together they are quite good, and they take about twenty seconds.
Hold it up to light
Light through the edge of a piece tells you a great deal, and phone flashlights make this easy.
Natural material is inconsistent on purpose. You should expect banding, color zoning, mineral inclusions, tiny internal fractures, and translucency that varies across the piece. Those "imperfections" are the material's history, and they are the thing collectors are usually paying for.
Glass and resin behave differently. Look for round suspended gas bubbles — nature very rarely produces those in this form. Look for swirls that resemble stirred paint rather than geological layering. Look for color that is perfectly even edge to edge with no zoning at all, which for many banded materials is close to impossible.
Reconstituted material is the trickiest of the three. Because it really is made of ground stone, it can pass a scratch test and feel plausibly heavy. What gives it away is texture: a fine, even, granular speckle throughout with no directional banding, sometimes with a slight color mottling that repeats at the same scale everywhere on the piece.
Dyed and treated stones are not automatically fakes
This one causes more arguments than it should. Dyeing agate has been done for a very long time and is completely standard in the trade. Heat treatment, stabilization of porous material with resin, and waxing are all normal processes with legitimate purposes — many stones would crumble under a carving burr without stabilization.
The issue is disclosure, not treatment. A seller who says "this is dyed agate" is being straight with you. A seller who presents dyed agate as rare natural blue material is not.
Dye usually leaves signs. It concentrates in porous zones and pools darker along cracks and fissures, so a piece with even body color but noticeably darker cracks has probably been dyed. Colors that sit outside the normal range for a species — electric blue, hot pink, vivid purple in materials that do not naturally occur that way — deserve a direct question.
Ask it plainly: has this been dyed or treated? An honest seller answers immediately. Evasion is its own answer.
What separates good carving from adequate carving
Once you have established that a piece is genuinely carved, the next question is whether it is carved well. That is a different skill to develop, and it is mostly about whether the carver worked with the material or fought it.
Good work reads the stone first. Banding gets oriented so it runs with the form rather than across it — a color layer becomes the crest of a wave, a darker zone lands where a shadow should be. A fracture gets designed around or removed rather than left sitting in the middle of a face. That kind of decision cannot be made in advance, which is why it is a reliable indicator of hand work.
Finishing quality inside recesses is the other tell. Anyone can polish an open convex curve; a wheel does most of that. The interior of a deep groove, the back of a curl, the underside of a form — that is where careless work shows, and where careful work quietly proves itself.
Proportion and confidence matter too. Hesitant carving tends to look thick and soft, with details that fade out because the carver was afraid of going too deep. Confident carving has crisp transitions and edges that are intentionally sharp or intentionally soft, not accidentally in between.
Questions worth asking a seller
Most of the ambiguity disappears if you simply ask. A short, friendly list:
- What stone is this? A specific species name — not "healing crystal," not "gemstone." Vagueness here is informative.
- Has it been dyed, heated, stabilized or coated? Ask even if you suspect the answer is no.
- Was this carved by hand or machine-cut? Sellers who work with carvers know, and generally enjoy the question.
- Is this a one-off or part of a batch? Both are legitimate; the answer should match the price.
- Who carved it, and where? Anyone selling genuine hand work can usually tell you something about the person who did it.
You are not interrogating anyone. You are establishing whether the person selling the object knows what the object is — and in practice, that single fact predicts almost everything else about the transaction.
The short version
Look for a seam. Rake light across the surface and look for directional tool marks. Weigh it in your hand and notice whether it stays cool. Shine light through the edge and look for banding rather than bubbles. Check the finish inside the recesses, not on the easy curves. Then ask what it is and how it was made.
Six checks, roughly a minute, and no equipment. Whether you end up buying a $20 machine-cut piece or a one-of-a-kind carving, you will at least know which one you are holding — and that is the whole point.
