Winter is when the Keys actually show off
December through March is high season for a reason: 75-degree days, no humidity wall, and sunsets that make the whole island stop walking. The resorts know it and price accordingly. But the best of the Keys has always been free or close to it - you just need to know where locals point their own visiting family.
Free (or nearly)
Sunset at the unfamous spots. Mallory Square is the show everyone knows; locals walk to the end of White Street Pier or any bayside beach in the Lower Keys instead. Same sun, no crowd.
Weekend artisan markets. From Key Largo to Key West, winter weekends fill with open-air markets - local art, handmade jewelry, hand-carved gemstones, food vendors. They're free to wander and the people-watching is elite. (You'll find our own family's booth at Lower Keys markets most weekends - come say hi.)
Old Town Key West on foot. The architecture, the chickens, the cemetery with the "I told you I was sick" headstone - a self-guided wander beats most paid tours.
Beach days, strategically. Sombrero Beach in Marathon and Anne's Beach in Islamorada are free. State parks (Bahia Honda, Fort Zachary) charge a few dollars and are worth every one.
Cheap eats - and the 10-second habit that makes them better
The Keys run on fish shacks and roadside Cuban counters, and the cheap spots are usually the good ones. One local habit worth stealing: before you pick, check the restaurant's state inspection history. Florida publishes every report - violations, re-inspections, all of it - and almost no visitor looks. We built a free 10-second lookup, FoodCodeScout, that surfaces the public data so you can judge for yourself. No ads, no account.
Wellness without the resort markup
Spa prices in the Keys run resort-high in winter. The budget move is the mobile option: practitioners who come to your rental, beach, or event. Our family runs Vibrations for a Higher Life - mobile sound bath sessions anywhere in the Keys, for relaxation and enjoyment, plus handmade gemstone and copper pieces at the weekend markets. Group sessions split the cost down to very reasonable per-person numbers.
The one paid thing worth planning ahead
Winter event calendars fill fast - from free community sound baths to holiday boat parades (free to watch from shore, by the way). Keep an eye on Eventbrite for Lower Keys listings, and check local radio (US1 104.1) for the week's community events.
